WEEK1
Concepts: Conflict and Communication
Mies Van Der Rohe
A concept of Mies which inspired me was his idea of "Open Space". The "Open Space" idea can be described as the harmony between the inside and outside space. That means the building itself does not have a specific border with the natural environment, the inside is the outside and the outside is the inside. In his production The Farnsworth House, he used glazed windows for all 4 facades of the house which gives people who lives in the house a feeling of communicating with the nature.
Peter Zumthor
The concept I chose for Peter was his theory of Lights and Shadows that created by using Geometrical Carvings. The geometrical shapes of the building can prevent diverse degrees of sunlight which creates a whole different experience between the guests inside the building and outside. This concept has conflict with Mies "Open Space" idea, Mies concept is aiming to embrace the natural lights and shadows through the using of transparent materials and Peter's purpose is creating lights and shadows by using geometrical carvings on buildings in order to produce an atmosphere that fit the function of the architecture.
